The 2008 Kentucky Derby was the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. The race took place on May 3, 2008 with 157,770 in attendance, the second largest in Derby history. Post time was 6:15 p.m. EDT and was televised in the United States on the NBC television network.
In 2008 Kent Jason Desormeaux won his third Kentucky Derby aboard Big Brown in a time of 2:01 4/5. Big Brown won by just under five lengths. He followed with his ride on Big Brown to victory in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in a time of 1:54 4/5. In the final race of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, Desormeaux eased Big Brown in after the colt tired at the quarter pole. On April 10, 2009, he won the Makers Mark Mile race on Mr. Sidney at Keeneland for a purse of 300,000 dollars. On May 2, 2009, Desormeaux and his horse Hold Me Back finished in 12th place. Desormeaux is a Hall of Fame jockey who holds the U.S. record for most races won in a single year, 1989.
Big Brown (foaled April 10, 2005 in Kentucky) is now a retired champion American Thoroughbred racehorse and winner of the 2008 Kentucky Derby and 2008 Preakness Stakes. Bred by Dr. Gary B. Knapp's Monticule Farms in Lexington, Kentucky, he won his first five race starts. He was sired by Grade III winner Boundary, a son of North American Champion sire Danzig, a son of Northern Dancer. Big Brown's dam was Mien, also a granddaughter of Northern Dancer through her sire, Nureyev.
Big Brown won the race by nearly 5 lengths. Eight Belles, the second place finisher and the first filly to run the Derby in nine years, was euthanized following the end of the race after fracturing both front ankles while galloping out. It is believed to be the first fatality in Kentucky Derby history.
